Day 1: Arrival in Štajerska Slovenia
Upon arrival at Ljubljana (LJU), Zagreb (ZAG) or Graz (GRZ) airport, your vehicle will take you to our hotel in Štajerska Slovenia. The transfer will take approximately 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on your arrival airport. Relax and unpack before meeting your fellow travelers for a welcome reception at a nearby winery. Take a walk in the vineyards, enjoy some fresh air, a cool glass of wine and an early dinner cooked from local ingredients. Overnight in Štajerska. (D)
Day 2: Haloze Wine Region, Ptuj, Maribor and Žiče Carthusian Monastery
Meet a local winemaker for a visit of the Haloze wine region and stop in the town of Ptuj for a visit to one of the oldest wine cellars in Europe. Lunch menu will include dishes prepared with cold-pressed pumpkin oil, a Slovenian specialty, and both current and archive vintages of Haloze wines. In the afternoon, visit a medieval town of Maribor, home of the oldest vine in the world (400-year old blauer koelner). Stop at the local 12th century French Carthusian Monastery to learn its fascinating history and its influence on the winemaking traditions of the region.
Overnight in Štajerska. (B,L,D)
Day 3: Logarska Valley, Lake Bled and Ljubljana
A 45-minute bus ride will take you to Logarska, a magnificent glacial valley carved in the Kamnik-Savinjska Alps. A perfect time to put on your hiking shoes, get some exercise in the crisp mountain air. A traditional Alpine lunch awaits at a local tavern. Seasonal vegetables, local mushrooms and berries will be on the menu today. In the afternoon, follow a narrow mountain road toward Austria, through the Julian Alps, to the romantic Lake Bled. In the evening, arrive in Ljubljana, Slovenia’s vibrant capital, for a brief tour and a regional cuisine tasting dinner at one of Slovenia’s top restaurants. Overnight in Ljubljana. (B,L,D)
Day 4: Vipava and Brda
Begin a full day expedition to Slovenia’s best known wine regions of Vipava and Goriška Brda. Famous for their organic and biodynamic winemaking traditions and “orange” skin macerated white wines, this part of Slovenia has plenty of local varietals to explore: Klarnica, pinela, zelen, rebula, tokaj friulano and pikolit, just to name a few. Afternoon wine presentation at one of Brda’s star winemakers will be followed by a wine pairing dinner at a small family winery. Your hosts will cook traditional Brda dishes that are known to combine Friulian, Austrian and Slovene culinary influences. An hour bus ride will take you across the border to Istria, Croatia, for a late check in at your hotel. Overnight in Istria. (B,L,D)
Day 5: Piran and Portorož
Slovenia’s Adriatic coast is only a few miles long but it is home to some of the charming Adriatic towns of Piran, Izola and the beach resort of Portorož. The Bay of Piran is known for its salt pans and is resplendent with fish and seafood. This morning you are invited on a private tour of a sustainable aquaculture family-operated branzino farm breeding some of the finest farmed fish in the world. After the visit, enjoy swimming, sea kayaking and a local BBQ lunch at a nearby beach. In the evening, an Istrian olive oil and local malvasia wine tasting will be followed by the Piran Branzino dinner at your hotel.
Overnight in Istria. (B,L,D)
Day 6: Truffles, Teran and Cooking Istrian Recipes
Start the day with a morning hike through Motovun Forest led by a local truffle hunter. Learn about the truffle varieties found in Istria, including when and how to hunt them. A truffle tasting lunch in the town of Motovun will be complemented by an introduction to the local Teran grape, its origins and politics. Spend the rest of the day in the company of a well-known Istrian winemaker who has singlehandedly put Istrian Malvasia back on the wine map. Take a tour of the winery and join a family dinner, where you can learn and practice cooking traditional Istrian dishes.
Overnight in Istria. (B,L,D)
Day 7: Rovinj
Drive to the fishing town of Rovinj for a guided walking tour of this unique medieval settlement. Enjoy walking the web of steep cobblestone streets and breathing in salty Adriatic air. Stop for a coffee at a local café and leave some time for some souvenir shopping. Lunch today is at your leisure in Rovinj. Your guide will make restaurant recommendations and assist with directions. Return to the hotel in the afternoon to enjoy some time by the pool, or perhaps a massage before an early dinner and a Farewell Tasting of Istrian Cheeses and Croatian Continental and Dalmatian wines. Overnight in Istria. (B,D)
Day 8: Departure
Breakfast will be served at the hotel. At the appointed hour, transportation will be provided for your transfer to Ljubljana (LJU) or Zagreb (ZAG) airport. (B)
